The NT Coastal and Marine Atlas is a web-based database and GIS platform and a hard-copy atlas of existing coastal and inshore marine datasets. Using national (ISO) metadata standards, the Atlas aims to improve accessibility of marine information by collating and standardising existing information. The NT Atlas is integrated with the Australian Coastal Atlas and the NT Spatial Data Directory (NTSDD). The NTSDD site allows for searches for metadata sets from within the mapping environment.
The Marine Biodiversity Group coordinates this project in collaboration with government and non-government research stakeholders. The National Oceans Office is a key partner, offering support in communications, education, consultation and database management. Key stakeholders include the Northern Land Council, Tiwi Land Council, Anindilyakwa Land Council and NT Coastcare. Other stakeholders include Charles Darwin University, NT Fisheries (DPIFM), the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Darwin Harbour Advisory Committee.
The project aims to identify information gaps on the condition and extent of NT coastal marine assets and identify priority areas, habitats and species for long-term monitoring. It is hoped that through this process, condition benchmarks and indicators for assessing and monitoring the condition and extent of the NT coastal and marine assets will be established.
The project will develop agreed, best-practice, technical (and cultural) survey protocols to undertake a collaborative, systematic survey (and habitat mapping) of the NT's coastal, marine and estuarine habitats and biodiversity. This information will be used to undertake a pilot marine and coastal survey of one or more identified priority areas, habitats or species.
