Biodiversity Conservation

The natural environment plays a very important role in Northern Territory lifestyle. For many people it provides a source of recreation, employment, culture, and identity. The Department of Natural Resources, Environment and The Arts is dedicated to preserving and managing our natural environment and wildlife by:

  • Educating the community about the importance of wildlife and biodiversity conservation within the environment.
  • Instigating research programs to provide information that will enable us to better manage and protect native wildlife.
  • Undertaking environmental risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential environmental threats.
  • Implementing management plans and recovery programs to protect threatened species and ecosystems.
  • Providing scientific advice and recommendations.
  • Assisting Indigenous communities to record their traditional biodiversity knowledge and values.
  • Developing and implementing management policies, guidelines and programs for the protection, conservation, and sustainable utilisation of native flora and fauna.
  • Producing and implementing strategies and management programs for the monitoring and control of native and introduced pest fauna species in the Northern Territory.
  • Ensuring the effective application, development and maintenance of the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act in accordance with other associated legislation in the Northern Territory.
  • Regulating and monitoring the issuing and compliance of permits relating to wildlife, and developing and maintaining the permits database.
  • Working with landholders and community groups to develop best practice management programs for biodiversity.
