NT Waterwise Central Australia Rebate Scheme
How do I know which products save water?

Australian residents can save water and money by identifying and purchasing water efficient products, through the two water efficiency rating systems; the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme and Smart Approved WaterMark (SAWM).
Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Scheme (WELS)
WELS products are identified by labels which provide information in two forms;
- A star rating (the more stars the more water efficient)
- Water consumption or flow figures
The Scheme was introduced on July 1 2006 and includes washing machines, dishwashers, toilets, taps and showers.
The label carries two important pieces of information to help the consumer to compare products - stars and water consumption or water flow figures.
For better water efficiency - the more stars the better and the lower the number the better!
The label shows:
- a one to six star rating for a quick assessment of the model's water efficiency - the more stars on the label the more water efficient the product and;
- a number showing the water consumption per use (whitegoods, sanitary ware) or the water flow per minute (plumbing products) based on laboratory tests.
For more information see visit the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme website.
Smart Approved WaterMark (SAWM)

The SAWM is a voluntary scheme for products and services which cannot be rated under the WELS program. Approved products so far include low flow car washes, waterless cleaning devices, gardening products, pool covers and filters, rainwater tanks and greywater systems.
If you manufacture or distribute water saving products or deliver water saving services you may be interested in applying for a Smart Watermark certificate.
For more information see the Smart Approved WaterMark website.
