NT Waterwise Central Australia Rebate Scheme

Frequently Asked Questions about the Scheme

Why save water?

Alice Springs residents are among the highest water users anywhere in Australia. An average Alice Springs household uses 535,000 litres of water per year. That’s around 1,500 litres of water per household each day!

Alice Springs is lucky to be situated close to a large reserve of very high quality groundwater. At our current rate of water usage this resource is estimated to last the town for the next 300-400 years. Read the Alice Springs Water Resource Strategy to find out more.

To preserve our water supply into the future we need to make changes to our lifestyle and the NT Waterwise Rebate Scheme helps you do this.

How do I save money by saving water?

By installing and using water saving products you reduce the amount of water you use around the home. You will also use less energy if you reduce the amount of hot water you use. Using less water and energy means less cost to you at bill time.

How do I save energy by saving water?

Water efficient products need less water to do their job. This means they use less power to get the water to your tap or appliance to achieve results, such as washing your clothes or your dishes.

Alice Springs water supply is pumped up from underground and then pumped to storage tanks in town. All of this pumping requires energy and by using less water, we reduce this demand.

Why do I need a Home Water Audit to apply for an Outdoor Plumbing Rebate?

To apply for the Outdoor Plumbing Rebate you need to undertake a Home Water Audit. The Home Water Audit will help you to determine the cheapest and easiest way to save water at home; help you to identify what rainwater or greywater technology may be suitable for your home and encourage you to think about the risks associated with the technology.

Why are some NT Waterwise rebates only available for a limited time?

Additional funds have been provided by Power and Water Corporation to help householders install more water efficient toilets, and to provide a bigger incentive to purchase a swimming pool cover or a more water efficient washing machine. These funds are only available for a limited time, after which the scheme will be reviewed.

Why do Power and Water want to observe my water usage patterns?

The NT Waterwise Central Australia Rebate Scheme is all about reducing the amount of water we use around the home. To make sure we are meeting this aim, we need to monitor the uptake of rebates and determine if these are leading to real water savings.

You can help us. By claiming any rebate in the NT Waterwise Central Australia Rebate Scheme, you consent to allow Power and Water to measure your water use to inform conclusions about the success of the Scheme in overall water savings.

Power and Water will not release details of individual households; data will be used to report on the overall success of the scheme or about the success of individual rebates.
