Flooding Maps - Katherine and Rural Areas

Flooding maps (Probable and Possible Areas of flooding) for Katherine town and rural areas have been developed to show the likelihood of flood inundation corresponding to the Flood Watch and Warning Advices in Katherine. They are based on modelled extents of flooding at specific river levels caused by a 100 year Average Recurrence Interval Storm event falling uniformly over the Katherine River catchment.

Katherine Flood Watch:
Flooding Map – Katherine Flood Watch should be read in conjunction with Katherine Flood Watch Advice issued by the Regional Counter Disaster Controller.

  • Katherine Flood Watch Advice is issued when the level of Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is at 5.5m and rising but not exceeding 6.5m.
  • The information on this map should only be used as an approximate guide to identify areas that could probably get flooded in about 12 hours of the issue of Flood Watch Advice. It also shows the extra areas that could possibly get flooded if the river continues to rise.
  • The flood extent boundary is approximate only.
  • No two flood events are the same. Therefore the actual flood extent during a flood event may differ significantly at some locations.

Katherine Flood Warning Category 1:
Flooding Map - Katherine Flood Warning Category 1 should be read in conjunction with Katherine Flood Warning Category 1 Advice issued by the Regional Counter Disaster Controller.

  • Katherine Flood Warning Category1 Advice is issued when the level of Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is at 6.5m and rising but not exceeding 7.5m.
  • The information on this map should only be used as an approximate guide to identify areas that could probably get flooded in about 12 hours of the issue of Category 1 Flood Warning Advice. It also shows the extra areas that could possibly get flooded if the river continues to rise.
  • The flood extent boundary is approximate only.
  • No two flood events are the same. Therefore the actual flood extent during a flood event may differ significantly at some locations.

Katherine Flood Warning Category 2:
Flooding Map - Katherine Flood Warning Category 2 should be read in conjunction with Katherine Flood Warning Category 2 Advice issued by the Regional Counter Disaster Controller.

  • Katherine Flood Warning Category 2 Advice is issued when the level of Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is at 7.5m, still rising and more rainfall is forecast for Katherine River catchment areas.
  • The information on this map should only be used as an approximate guide to identify areas that could probably get flooded in about 12 hours of the issue of Category 2 Flood Warning Advice. It also shows the extra areas that could possibly get flooded if the river continues to rise.
  • The flood extent boundary is approximate only.
  • No two flood events are the same. Therefore the actual flood extent during a flood event may differ significantly at some locations.
