Gauging Stations
A water level recorder installed to measure and record the depth of water in a stream is referred to as a gauging station.
The department maintains160 gauging stations around the Territory. River heights on a continuous basis are logged electronically by a logger. The historical data of continuous river heights at these stations are available from the Department's database.
Some stations are connected to the office by telephone landline, satellite phone or radio link to get current river height data for flood warning purposes. Reports and plots from these stations are available from the Telemetered gauging stations section of this website.
Stream Flows
At most gauging stations, stream flows (gaugings) are undertaken throughout the year to determine the rate of flow at a range of river heights. The results of each gauging is plotted onto a graph, allowing a stage to flow relationship to be developed. This relationship is called a rating table.
From the rating table a rate of flow can be determined for any known river height. The river height having been determined from the instrumentation at the gauging station.
