Katherine Water Advisory Committee

Community Consultation

On 21 February 2007, the Minister for Environment announced the formation of the Katherine Water Advisory Committee.  This formally began the process of developing a framework for the sustainable management of groundwater from the Tindall Limestone Aquifer, Katherine.

The initial draft of the Plan was released in June 2008 for a public submission period and a public information session was held. The draft Plan was revised based on the submissions received during this consultation period and the Plan was released for a second public comment period in December 2008.

Further changes were made to the Plan prior to its finalisation in August 2009.
The Katherine community and key interest groups’ involvement during the consultation process was essential in the Plan’s development. Parties involved in the consultation process included:

  • Agriculture groups
  • Horticulture groups
  • Indigenous groups
  • Public water provider groups
  • Northern Territory Government departments
  • Environmental groups
  • Local Government
  • Katherine community
