Joint Management Stories
Joint Management at Tnorala (Gosse Bluff)
Tnorala (Gosse Bluff) Conservation Reserve is a spectacular place located 150km west of Alice Springs. The Reserve has been jointly managed by Traditional Owners and the Parks & Wildlife Service since 1991. Tnorala is a sacred site to the Western Arrernte people and the crater of a massive comet that crashed to Earth about 130,000 million years ago.
For several years, the senior Traditional Owners of Tnorala had wanted to open more areas within the Reserve for visitors to enjoy. A short walking track to lookout on a hill located in the middle was chosen as the first of several projects aimed at sharing this special place with visitors.
In August 2007, nine members of the Tjuwanpa Ranger group along with five Parks and Wildlife Service rangers from Ormiston Gorge constructed the new track. The work took place over several days, and involved clearing rocks, constructing steps and trimming vegetation. The new track begins in the visitor picnic area and includes interpretive signage.
The Tjuwanpa Rangers said that they enjoyed the project, especially camping out overnight with the Parks & Wildlife rangers. Parks and Wildlife rangers said they also enjoyed the opportunity to work with the Tjuwanpa Rangers and are looking forward to the next project planned for Tnorala.
