Park Management

The Parks and Wildlife Service of the NT manages more than 4.7 million hectares, about 3.5 per cent (%) of Northern Territory’s land area.

The aim of park management is to conserve the natural, cultural and heritage values of the park while providing opportunities for nature-based recreation and tourism and other community interests such as research and education. To balance these aims planning is essential.

Many parks and reserves have statutory Plans of Management or Joint Management Plans that set out how the aims of park management will be addressed park by park. 32 parks and reserves, about one third of all parks managed by the NT Government are jointly managed with Aboriginal Traditional Owners.
