Introduction to the List of Holdings
The records held at the Northern Territory Archives Service are arranged in records series, listed under the name of the creator or collector (individual/person, organisation or government agency) which created or collected them. In order to locate records useful to a research topic, it is necessary to determine the agency which may have created or collected records relevant to that subject.
Entry in this list does not necessarily mean that a record series is open for public inspection. Government records are closed for 30 years and for longer if they are of a confidential nature. Some series of personal records and oral histories are closed to the public for certain periods of time at the request of the donor or interviewee.
Specific guides to holdings have also been created to areas of interest in the holdings, such as the Oral History Collection, Mining, Government Residents, Central Australia, Aboriginal, Railway and Chinese, Police Forces, Cyclone Tracy.
The entries in each section are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the creator or collector. The basic series information for each record series registered under each creator consists of series number (NTRS, E, F or O), the series title and date range.
Further information for most series is available in the series consignment lists. These series consignment lists should be searched for item level information before requesting the records. The detail available in each list varies. Every effort is made to ensure that this information is accurate.
