Guide to Archives Relating to Northern Territory Government Residents and Administrators
The range of archives held at the Northern Territory Archives Service (NTAS) relating to each Government Resident and Administrator varies. Some Government Residents and Administrators are well represented while others are not represented at all.
A substantial amount of correspondence is held in the series NTRS 790, Inward Correspondence to the Government Resident, 1870-1911. This, however, is official rather than personal correspondence.
NTAS holds " Administrator of the Northern Territory" and " Government Resident of the Northern Territory" series of archives. When these series specifically relate to an Administrator or a Government Resident they have been listed in this guide. However they have not been listed if they relate to more than one Administrator or Government Resident. For example a series entitled 'Floor plan of "The Residency" (Government House)' will not been found in this guide. Please refer to the general List of Holdings for these general series.
NTAS also holds a considerable amount of official documentation relating to Government Residents and Administrators created while exercising their official powers and duties in the administering of Lands, Mining and Works and other government functions. These series of archives are not included in this guide and can also be found in the general List of Holdings.
Personal archives listed in this guide mainly comprise papers and photographs which have been donated by the families of past Government Residents and Administrators. The guide is by no means comprehensive and will be updated periodically as further material is located within NTAS holdings or deposited with NTAS.
The series of archives listed here may not all be immediately available on open public access. Archives staff can advise further in this regard.
