The Role of the Northern Territory Archives Service
The Northern Territory Archives Service (NTAS) was established by the Northern Territory Government in 1983 as the archival authority of the Northern Territory Government.The Information Act 2002 assigns the NTAS with responsibility to preserve and facilitate access to Territory archives and to coordinate standard recordkeeping practices for Northern Territory Government organisations

Archives Collection and Preservation
Archives relating to the Northern Territory are collected from both the Northern Territory Government and private sources. Northern Territory archives are unique unpublished records of significance to the community. Once collected, the archives are registered, described and preserved in suitable secure conditions to facilitate long term community access.
Oral History
The oral history program aims to record, preserve and make available to researchers the recollections and experiences of persons who have lived and worked in the Northern Territory, and who in many cases may leave no written records.
Archives Access
The following services are provided to the community:
- Access to archives in a public search room.
- Copying and reprographic services.
- Limited research for remote inquirers.
- Exhibitions about Territory History.
- Information sessions and tours.
Northern Territory History Grants
The Northern Territory Government History Grants which are offered on an annual basis in the form of monetary grants, are designed to encourage and support the work of researchers who are recording and writing about Territory History.
Government Recordkeeping
The coordination of recordkeeping for Northern Territory Government organisations involves the establishment of standards and compliance monitoring, the provision of records storage and disposal services, the delivery and administration of the corporate recordkeeping system and the provision of training and advice.
