Description of Telemetered Gauging StationStation Number: G9030089Station Name: Waterhouse River at Road Bridge This site is located on the Central Arnhem Road 1.3 km SW of Beswick and approximately 52 km S of Katherine. The Waterhouse River flows into the Roper River 2 km downstream of the Mataranka Homestead. The site was established in February 1972 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data. This data is available for the prediction of flood events that may affect Mataranka. The recorder itself is situated adjacent to the Waterhouse River bridge which has a deck level of approximately 6.0 m (GD). The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry. The Waterhouse River usually flows continuously from December or January to August each year and is usually dry for the remainder. The largest event recorded at this site was 10.06 m (GD) in January 1998, some 4.0 m above the bridge. |
