Description of Telemetered Gauging StationStation Number : G9030001Station Name : Elsey Creek at Warlock Ponds This site is located on the old Stuart Highway (or Elsey Cemetery road) approximately 18 km S of Mataranka. Water from Elsey Creek flows into the Roper River 2 km upstream of Djilkminggan. It was established in November 1966 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data. This data is available for the prediction of flood events that may effect downstream communities such as Djilkminggan and Elsey Station. The recorder itself is situated adjacent to the old Stuart Highway bridge which has a deck level of approximately 4.55 m (GD). The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry. Elsey Creek usually flows continuously from December to May each year and is dry for the remainder. The largest event recorded at this site was almost 6.8 m (GD) in March 1976, some 2.25 m above the bridge. |
