Description of Telemetered Gauging StationStation Number: G8210009Station Name: Magela Ck at Downstream of Jabiru This site is located downstream of the Ranger Uranium Mine at Jabiru. It was established in 1971 to measure height and flow in Magela Creek. At that time the mine was able to release water from its retention pond once flows were over 20 cumecs. The Mine no longer wishes to release water into the Magela Creek system and the data is used primarily by the Federal Government Environmental Division (Supervising Scientist Division) located at Jabiru. The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry. NRETA Hydrographic staff carry out stream flow measurements on a regular basis and upgrade rating tables at periods of change. Magela Creek at this site stops flowing around May to June and first flows around early December. The largest recorded event occurred in March 2006 with a height of 6.6 m which flowed over the gauging station. |
