Station Number: G8170002

Station Name: Adelaide River at Railway Bridge

g8170002

This site is located at Adelaide River township. It was established in May 1952 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data. This data is available to provide timely advice regarding the prediction of flood events that may affect Adelaide River.

The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD), but is also available in Australian Height Datum (AHD). This data is relayed back to the Departments Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry.

The Adelaide River at this site usually flows all year but after particularly poor wet seasons, it can cease to flow. The largest event recorded at this site occurred in March 2007 reaching 13.0 m on the gauge.
