Description of Telemetered Gauging StationStation Number: G8150179Station Name: Howard River at Koolpinyah Stockyard This site is located 10 m upstream of Gunn Point Road at the Howard River road crossing. It was established in December 1962 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height data. Recently, water quality monitoring and sampling has also been implemented. The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall, river height, turbidity and automatically takes water samples for physical analysis. The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry. The Howard river at this site has a minimal base flow maintained throughout the dry season by local spring flows. The largest event recorded at this site was in March 1997, reading 7.8 m on the gauge. Top of bank at this site is approximately 6.5 m. |
