Station Number: G8150018

Station Name: Elizabeth River at the Stuart Highway

g8150018

This site is located 35 km S of Darwin on the Stuart Highway. It was established in February 1953 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height data. More recently, water quality monitoring and sampling has also been implemented.

The instrumentation at the site measures river height, turbidity and automatically takes water samples for physical analysis. The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry.

The Elizabeth River at this site usually flows from November to July due to wet season runoff, but ceases to flow for the remainder of the year. The largest event recorded at this site occurred in April 2006, reaching 4.06 m on the gauge. The South bound lanes of the highway have a bridge deck level of approximately 3.0 m, with the North bound lanes at 4.8 m.
