Description of Telemetered Gauging Station

Untitled Document

Station Number: G8140169

Station Name: Fenton Creek, West of Fenton Airfield

g8140169

The Fenton Creek gauging station is located W of the old Fenton airfield and was installed in October 2006 primarily to monitor land use changes in the Douglas Daly area. The area in which the station is located may be developed beyond the sole use for cattle grazing as is currently the case.

The potential for crop growing and improved pasture is high and monitoring is required regarding suspended sediment and turbidity levels before any land clearing begins. Monitoring will then continue after any development takes place. This will hopefully provide information and answer some of the questions relating to soil erosion and catchment degradation in the Douglas Daly area.

The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall, river height and turbidity and has logger activated water sampler which operates in periods of flow with samples being collected on a weekly basis.

The river height is recorded in metres to a local gauge datum (GD). Logger data is relayed via a satellite phone to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin every day.
