Description of Telemetered Gauging StationStation Number: G8140159Station Name: Seventeen Mile Creek at Waterfall View This site is located 3 km NW of Katherine Gorge. Flows from Seventeen Mile Creek flow into the Katherine River at the base of the first gorge. This site was established in November 1962 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data. This data is available for the prediction of flood events that may effect down stream communities such as Katherine and Daly River. The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry. Seventeen Mile Creek at this site has a base flow of approximately 0.3 m3/s, which is maintained throughout the dry season by local spring flows. The largest event recorded at this site was in January 1998, reading 7.37 m on the gauge. |
