Description of Telemetered Gauging Station

Untitled Document

Station Number: G8140060

Station Name: Cullen River at Railway Bridge Upstream of the Stuart Highway

g8140060

This gauging station is located on the embankment of the new railway bridge constructed in 2003. The gauging station was established in September 2004 on behalf of DIPE Roads Division, who requested an installation that provided a rising river warning. The Cullen River has a history of cutting the Stuart Highway at this location during significant local storm events.

The instrumentation measures rainfall and river height. This river height data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry. When the river rises to an alarm level, the site automatically sends an SMS message to DIPE Roads Division staff, enabling them to instigate road closure procedures.

The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD), with the Stuart Highway bridge having a deck value of 6.2 m and the new railway bridge having a deck value of 11. 5m. The largest event recorded at this site was in January 2006, reading 6.5 m on the gauge.
