Description of Telemetered Gauging Station

Untitled Document

Station Number: G8140022

Station Name: Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre

g8140022

This site is located 600 m downstream of the first Katherine Gorge and incorporates flow from 17 Mile Creek. It was established in October 1998 for the purpose of flood warning following the January 1998 Katherine Flood, which had submerged the previous Instrumentation site. It is incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data. This data is available for the prediction of flood events that may effect down stream communities such as Katherine and Daly River.

The instrumentation at the site measures river height. River height is recorded in metres to a local gauge datum (GD), but is also available in Australian Height Datum (AHD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry.

The Katherine River at this site has a base flow of approximately 1 m3/s, which is maintained throughout the dry season by spring flows in the catchment. The largest event recorded at this site since 1998 was in April 2006, reading 9.47 m on the gauge.
