Station Number: G8110232

Station Name: Wickham River at Williams Crossing

g8110232

This site is located 39 km upstream (by river) of Victoria River Downs homestead. It was established in September 1965 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data. This data is available to provide timely advice regarding the prediction of flood events that may affect communities along the river.

The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. River height is recorded in metres to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry.

The Wickham River at this site usually ceases to flow late in the dry season, although over the last few years it has continued to flow all year round. The largest event recorded at this site was in February 2002, reading 15.47 m on the gauge.
