Station Number: G8110113

Station Name: Victoria River at Dashwood Crossing

g8110113

This site is located at Dashwood crossing on the Buchanan Highway approximately 92 km (by road) west of Top Springs and 3 km downstream of the junction of the Wickham and Victoria Rivers. It was established in January 1963 as part of a program to investigate and assess the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data.

At present the data is used as a guide for prediction of flood events at the Victoria Highway Bridge, Coolibah Station and Timber Creek, as well as at Dashwood Crossing. This data is available to provide timely advice regarding the prediction of flood events that may affect the above listed places.
The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. River height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry.

The Victoria River at this site usually ceases to flow around August. The largest event recorded at this site was in February 2001, reading 18.37 m on the gauge.
