Station Number: G8110018

Station Name: Victoria River at Victoria Highway

g8110018

This site is located on the Western side of the Victoria River at the Victoria Highway Road Bridge. It was first established in November 1972 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. Continuous data is available through to January 1984, and then from January 2004 when a new station was built and incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data. This data is available to provide timely advice regarding the height of the river in regards to the Highway bridge, which has a deck level of 12.0 m.

The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. River height is recorded in metres to a local gauge datum (GD), but is also available in Australian Height Datum (AHD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry.

The Victoria River at this site usually stops flowing through the dry season. The largest event recorded at this site was in March 1974, reading 23.5 m on the gauge.
