Station Number: G8110016

Station Name: Victoria River at Kalkarindji

g8110016

This site is located behind the police station at Kalkarindji (Wave Hill). It was established in June 1954 as part of a program to investigate and assess the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data.

At present this data is being used as a guide for prediction of flood events that may affect major crossings downstream such as Victoria Highway Bridge, Dashwood Crossing etc, as well as the Wave Hill Community itself. This data is available to provide timely advice regarding the prediction of flood events that may affect downstream communities, such as Pigeon Hole.

The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. River height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry.

The Victoria river at this site usually ceases to flow in April or May. The largest event recorded at this site was in February 2001, reading 17.02 m on the gauge. The Buntine Highway bridge has a deck level of 9.3 m.
