Description of Telemetered Gauging StationStation Number: G8110007Station Name: Victoria River at Coolibah Homestead This site is located 400 m from Coolibah Homestead, 24 km downstream of the Victoria Highway Road Bridge over the Victoria River. It was established in September 1952 as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height and rainfall data. This data is available to provide timely advice regarding the prediction of flood events that may affect downstream communities, such as Timber Creek. The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. The river height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry. The Victoria river at this site usually flows all year, but in exceptionally dry years it ceases to flow. The largest event recorded at this site was in February 1991, reading 19.54 m on the gauge. |
