Station Number: G0290240

Station Name: Tennant Creek at Old Telegraph Station

g0290240

This site is located on Tennant Creek, some 12 km to the north of Tennant Creek town centre. It was established in 1972, as part of a program to investigate the water resources in the Northern Territory. It has since been incorporated into the Departments’ Flood Warning Telemetry Network, providing near ‘real time’ river height data.

The instrumentation at the site measures rainfall and river height. River height is recorded in metres, to a local gauge datum (GD). This data is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via telemetry. This data is automatically forwarded to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The maximum recorded river height at this station was 5.338 m, recorded on February 12, 1997.
