Station Number: G0060047

Station Name: Charles River at Big Dipper

g0060047

This site is located on the Southern side of the Charles River, at what is known as “The Big Dipper” on the old Stuart Highway, just North of Alice Springs. It was established in 1958, recording both Gauge Height (River Height) & Rainfall, then closed again in 1987. In 1990 the site was re-opened with Telemetry, providing near ‘real time’ river height & rainfall data. This data is available for the prediction of flood events that may affect Alice Springs.

The instrumentation at the site measures river height & rainfall, which is relayed back to the Departments’ Hydrographic unit in Darwin via the ‘ALERT’ telemetry system. (Automated Local Evaluation in Real Time) This data is automatically forwarded to the Bureau of Meteorology.
