Management Plans
When discussing planning, it is important to note the distinction between a ‘strategy’ and a ‘plan’. A ‘strategy’ is a long term plan of action or broad non-specific statement of an approach designed to achieve a particular goal. A ‘plan’ is a series of steps to be carried out or goals to be accomplished.
Section 10 of the Weeds Management Act 2001 (the Act) provides for the Minister to approve weed management plans. Weed management plans can be developed for a range of purposes including property specific, regional and Northern Territory wide.
Weed Management plans may be developed in order to:
- prevent a declared weed or potential weed entering the Northern Territory
- prevent anything containing or carrying a declared weed or potential weed being brought into or taken out of the Territory
- manage a declared weed or potential weed within the Territory or part of the Territory; or
- prevent a declared weed or potential weed being propagated or moved within the Territory.
Several draft weed management plans for the Northern Territory are currently at various stages of development and it is anticipated that these plans will be finalised in the coming months.
Following consultation through the statutory Weed Advisory Committee, the draft plans will then be submitted to the Minister for approval to circulate for public comment.
