Khaki weed is declared a Class B (growth and spread to be controlled) and Class C (not to be introduced to the Northern Territory) weed in accordance with the NT Weeds Management Act 2001.
Khaki weed is a native of tropical America and is widespread in parts of Australia including the NT where it has been recorded in the Darwin, Gulf, Katherine, Victoria River, Barkly and Alice Springs districts.
Khaki weed can quickly invade pastures, lawns, parklands, around bores, along river banks and disturbed areas. Its prickly seed bracts can cause injury to humans and animals.
