Written approval from the Pastoral Land Board is required before undertaking clearing on a pastoral lease.  This includes:

  • Thinning trees to improve access and management.
  • Pushing or chaining non-preferred shrub or tree species.
  • Maintaining or clearing regrowth from previous broadscale clearing operations where such clearing was NOT approved by the Pastoral Land Board since 1992 or was not carried out in accordance with the approval issued by the Board.

Clearing of vegetation on pastoral leases is to be in accordance with the ‘Guidelines for Clearing Pastoral Land’ published by the Pastoral Land Board. The guidelines reflect the requirements of section 38(1)(h) of the Pastoral Land Act.

The guidelines specify that formal approval for clearing is not required when clearing for:

  • Fixed improvements such as fences or buildings.
  • Selectively removing noxious weeds.
  • Removing woody weeds over an area of less than ten hectares in areas surrounding fixed improvements such as yards, holding paddocks and laneways; or
  • Maintaining or clearing regrowth from previous broadscale clearing operations provided such clearing was subject to the written approval of the Pastoral Land Board since 1992 and was carried out in accordance with the approval issued by the Board.

The Pastoral Land Board has published revised Guidelines for Clearing Pastoral Land that are consistent with the native vegetation clearing controls introduced under the Planning Act.

The revised guidelines outline changes to the procedures for assessing and approving clearing applications on pastoral land. This includes a requirement for preparation of a property management plan for land clearing development, public notification processes inviting submissions on pastoral land clearing applications and a register of determinations to be available for public viewing.

Copies of the clearing guidelines and application forms can also be obtained from the Executive Officer of the Pastoral Land Board.
