Core Attributes and Data Storage

Core Attributes

Core attributes for vegetation site data and map unit data have been developed to promote consistency in future and historic vegetation data sets. The core attributes comply with the National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) Classification System, presenting users with compatible and comparable spatial vegetation data. The core attributes simplify querying vegetation information across adjoining surveys at the same spatial scale.
Technical specifications for site data and map unit data core attributes are currently in preparation.

Vegetation site data and map unit data with core attributes will become available on NRETA Maps once historic datasets have been attributed and as future datasets become available.

Site Data

An NT Vegetation Site Data Inventory (pdf 306Kb) was undertaken in 2003 to determine the existence and distribution of vegetation site data in the NT. The inventory established approximately 30,000 vegetation sites of varying detail exist in the NT. Vegetation site data have been collected over the last 30 years as part of flora and fauna surveys, land system/unit mapping, vegetation mapping and various monitoring projects. The inventory estimated 66% of the site data are stored electronically; many are stored in different packages.

Polygon/Map Unit Data

Standard storage of vegetation mapping datasets is as Arc/Info coverages, shapefiles and MapInfo files in GDA94 geographical format.
