NT Vegetation Mapping
A workshop was held at CSIRO conference room on the 26th March 2007 to determine current NRM requirements for finer scale vegetation mapping of the NT. It was attended by a number of prominent NRM managers in the NT, a guest speaker from the Queensland herbarium, as well as private consultants.
The Purpose of the Workshop was to:
- Present a synopsis of vegetation survey and mapping in the NT (including current initiatives).
- Determine Stakeholder requirements for more detailed vegetation mapping (NTG, CDU, CSIRO, Commonwealth).
Review and outline possible future strategies and initiatives including:
- Decide on scale, extent (priority areas)
- Possible methodology
- Who and where the project should reside
- Resources available or required (people, funds)
- Collaboration
- Future funding opportunities: NTG and others

Key Actions
It was agreed that a finer scale mapping proposal should be developed inlcuding the following recommendations:
Stage 1) Develop and circulate a finer scale mapping criteria paper to workshop participants.
Stage 2) Based on the mapping criteria paper, establish a Working Group of interested workshop participants.
Stage 3) Develop a specific finer scale mapping proposal and a strategy to implement the proposal
On the basis of this meeting a working group was formed (Greening Australia NT, EPA Queensland Herbarium and NRETA - Darwin and Alice Springs) to collaboratively write the Stage 1 criteria paper. The first draft of this paper has been written (circa July 2007) and is currently being reviewed by the Working Group.
