Vegetation Survey and Mapping - Darwin
Seminar
‘The Evolution of Vegetation Survey and Mapping in the NT – Towards an Australia-wide Consensus’ Seminar was held on Friday 9th March at the Museum and Art Gallery Theatrette.
Chief Executive of NRETA David Ritchie opened the Seminar to approximately 80 Plant Ecologists. The Seminar was organised and presented by Donna Lewis and Peter Brocklehurst of Land and Vegetation, Land and Water Division. The Purpose of the Seminar was to:
- Encourage standardising collecting, classifying and describing vegetation data in the NT to comply with national standards.
- Present a synopsis of vegetation survey and mapping in the NT.
- Provide an awareness of national collaboration and vegetation initiatives in the NT
- Deliver a national overview of nationally consistent vegetation information – the development and current status of the National Vegetation Information System framework.
- Launch the Northern Territory Guidelines and Field Methodology for Vegetation Survey and Mapping
The Seminar Comprised Four Themes:

Field Workshop
A Vegetation Field Workshop was held at Howard Springs Nature Park on Thursday 2nd August with approximately 60 Ecologists in attendance. The Workshop was instigated following the Vegetation Survey and Mapping Seminar on the 9th March 2007.
The primary purpose of the Workshop was to:
- Outline and demonstrate general vegetation site sampling procedures.
- Introduce and demonstrate the National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) Classification System.
- Encourage the future adoption of NVIS for classifying and describing vegetation in the Northern Territory.
The Workshop consisted of three major Sections contained in the Vegetation
Field Workbook (pdf 1.3Mb) :
- Outline and brief demonstration of Vegetation Field Sampling Procedures.
- Vegetation sampling field exercise.
- Description and exercise for classifying and describing vegetation with the NVIS Classification System.
