Fish Monitoring in Rapid Creek
The Aquatic Health Unit conducts fish surveys in the freshwater reaches of Rapid Creek on an annual basis. This is conducted using ‘electro-fishing’, a very effective technique that involves passing an electric current through the water to temporarily stun the fish. This allows field officers to capture, identify and count the fish in a section of creek and then release the fish back into the water unharmed. Regular fish surveys will not only provide an indication of the health of fish communities in the creek but will also help to identify outbreaks of exotic fish.
Fish surveys have been undertaken at 3 sites (jpg 130Kb).
Rapid Creek fish survey results are available in the Rapid Creek Report Card 2009 (pdf 2.37Mb). The report cards describe the health of aquatic ecosystems in the region.
