Binjari Community

This community has carried out landcare work for a number of years and has won a Landcare award for its efforts. It works closely with Greening Australia’s Aboriginal Landcare Education Program. Activities include dust suppression and tree planting work. Trees are grown for the projects in the community shadehouse. The community, through several senior traditional owners, published an ethnobiology book in 1999 which details names of plants and animals across the Wardaman lands.

Clyde Fenton Landcare Group

Clyde Fenton Landcare Group was formed in December 1996 through concern about the management of the Katherine River corridor across from the Clyde Fenton Primary School. Since then the group has undertaken a number of different projects along the riverbank which will benefit the whole corridor. The group has been laying irrigation systems, collecting seeds, propagating the seeds, planting and mulching the seedlings. The project has been supported by Katherine Landcare Group, Katherine Town Council and Green Corps teams.

Kalano Community Association

The Kalano community is completing the Draft Sustainable Land Management Strategy which focuses on vegetation management in association with sustainable agricultural activities. They are also investigating suitable bush tucker for commercial production and implementing appropriate remnant vegetation management. The group plans land management training and wants to set up a best practice site as a model for other Aboriginal communities.

The Katherine Landcare Group has been active in the Katherine community since mid 1996. They are currently involved in the rehabilitation and sustainable management of the Katherine River corridor and have made recommendations for the mine plan of management and rehabilitation for the Maude Creek Gold Mine. They are actively campaigning to introduce container deposit legislation into the NT. The group also coordinates the Katherine Waterwatch Program. They won the NT Landcare Catchment Award in 2001.

Territory Anti Litter Committee - Katherine

The Katherine TALC group are committed to ensuring local people are involved in identifying and taking action on litter problems peculiar to their area. They have representatives from industry, education, government and the public and meet monthly to discuss strategies to “reduce, reuse and recycle” the waste from Katherine. Every clean up in the Katherine River reduces the amount of rubbish which can entangle wildlife in the rivers and oceans. They sponsor environmental projects with an emphasis on litter reduction and recycling.
