Telstra Landcare Local Government Award
Winner - Yugul Mangi Council Ngukurr
Over the last 5 years the Yugul Mangi Council at Ngukurr has demonstrated a commitment to the Landcare ethic. They have carried out revegetation, dust suppression and weed and fire control. The council's successes have encouraged other communities in the region to inquire about following in a similar direction.
BHP Landcare Research Award
Winner - Centralian Land Management Association
The Centralian Land Management Association has been the main organisation to monitor the impact of Rabbit Calicivirus in the Northern Territory. Their Calicivirus monitoring program is the only one to be truly run by a land managers' group. Management decisions are now being made on the basis of the group's research.

Bushfire Council Fire Management Award
Winner - Defence Estate Organisation NT
The Defence Estate Organisation has worked intensively on the Mount Bundy Training Area to develop and trial fire management methods. The success of these practices has lead to them being adopted in other Defence Training areas in Northern Australia and to their use by adjacent landowners.
North Ltd. Landcare Education Award
Winner - Ludmilla Primary School
The Ludmilla Primary School uses Ludmilla Creek for an environmental program. They carry out regular Waterwatch monitoring and have been revegetating a site adjacent to the school with the help of the local Landcare group. Their "We all live in a catchment" play was a big hit at the launch of the Landcare Awards in March.
Merit Certificate Awarded to Clyde Fenton School Landcare Group
The Clyde Fenton School Landcare Group has steadily grown over time and as more work is completed more people participate in, its activities. To date the achievements include the up-grade of a bike path, rock drop structure to stabilise the river bank and prevent further erosion. Over two hundred trees have planted, all under irrigation. Further plans include the creation of an access pathway to the river, tree planting in two directions, linking with the Katherine Landcare group projects along O'Shea Terrace. The project has been supported by the Katherine Landcare Group, Katherine Town Council and Green Corps teams.

BP Landcare Catchment Award
Winner - Ludmilla Creek Landcare Group
The Ludmilla Creek Landcare Group launched their draft catchment management plan at the Parap markets in 1998. The theme, "Ludmilla Creek Our Corridor to the Sea", aims to link all stakeholders together in catchment management. The plan has been well received by the public and agencies and widespread responses will be collated into a final document in the near future.
Cotton Australia Landcare Primary Producer Award
Winner - Jeff Little, Opium Creek Station
Jeff Little has worked hard to implement sustainable land management practices on Opium Creek station. These include rotational grazing, strip clearing, noxious weed control and fire management. Jeff is an active member of the Mary River Landcare Group.

Merit Certificate Awarded to ERA Environmental Services
ERA Environmental Services research has assessed the potential for using tropical native grasses for revegetation instead of the more commonly used introduced species. Based on their results improved revegetation strategies have been developed for disturbed landscapes.
Fuji Xerox Landcare business Award
Winner - Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd
Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd has supported Landcare activities in the Ngukurr region for the last three years. The Ngukurr dust mitigation project is one of the most successful management collaborations between business and an indigenous community.
Merit Certificate Awarded to Top End Seeds
Top End Seeds supplies native tree, shrub and grass seeds to clients including the mining industry, government and Landcare groups. They advocate the use of native seed in revegetation work and donate seeds and expertise to local environmental and Landcare groups.
Ford Landcare Media Award
Winner - AVI Productions
The "Just Do It" video produced by AVI and Tangentyere Landcare is aimed at providing information about Landcare practices in Aboriginal communities in the arid zone. Each story in the video uses puppets to explore the four themes of plants, animals, water and use of tools.
Merit Certificate Award to Lindsay Wright ABC Radio, Alice Springs
Lindsay Wright reports for the ABC's NT Country Hour. During the past year he has carried out about 40 interviews about Landcare issues. These issues ranged from Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) funding allocations and groups seeking sponsorship from rabbit and weed control to Landcare on aboriginal communities and pastoral properties.
Alcoa Landcare Community Group Award
Winner - Katherine River Landcare Group
The Katherine Landcare Group plays an important role in raising the Katherine community's awareness in regards to sustainable land and water management practices, mining, waste management and pollution control issues. The group have also achieved onground riverbank rehabilitation and Waterwatch monitoring.
Merit Certificate Awarded to Ludmilla Creek Landcare Group
The Ludmilla Creek Landcare Group was formed to promote community involvement in the management of their catchment. They have carried out extensive revegetation work using direct seeding, tree planting and weed control and involve other community groups in helping to better manage the creek.
Natural Heritage Trust Rivercare Award
Winner - Roper River Landcare Group
The Roper River Landcare Group has fenced a 154 kilometres of the river off from stock and feral animals to protect valuable riparian habitat, they anticipate achieving a further 250km over the next 3 years. A project managing the noxious weed Parkinsonia included a very successful biological control insect breeding program.
Bushcare Nature Conservation Award
Winner - Katherine Landcare Group
The Katherine Landcare Group has been managing a rehabilitation project along O'Shea Terrace and another behind the Katherine High School. The projects have involved removing litter, controlling erosion through earthworks, and controlling weeds, collecting and propagating native trees and installing pedestrian access.
National Landcare program individual landcarer award
Winner - Bob Millington
Bob Millington has been the Coordinator of the Central Land Management Association for 10 years. CLMA is the pastoral industries Landcare group and its members live in remote locations running family enterprises. Bob has raised CLMA from a membership of 5 to one of the most successful Landcare groups in Australia. A majority of land managers in the region are now members. Bob has been instrumental in introducing the Landcare ethic to the region.
CLMA won "Alcoa of Australia National Landcare Community Group Award in 1998, and the NT Landcare Community Group Award in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997.
Bob has chased a vision of a sustainable and productive pastoral industry in central Australia and will be sorely missed on his retirement.
Merit Certificate Awarded to Banduk Marika
Banduk Marika has coordinated the Gamarrwa Nuwul Landcare work for 9 years. Thanks to Banduk, Yirrkala possesses a strong environmental ethic and very enthusiastic work crew. She has developed a form of Landcare which maintains traditional land management whilst embracing contemporary environmental techniques.
