These four glass paintings are part of a larger donation of seventeen glass paintings, generously donated to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory by Mr Chips Mackinolty in 2005.

Javanese Glass Paintings

Glass painting was a popular folk art practice in Java in the 1920s and 1930s. Using popular characters from the wayang kulit shadow puppet plays, noteworthy events of everyday life were captured. These paintings illustrate the adaptation of aspects of Western dress styles, inventions and pastimes by Javanese people in the mid 20th century.

Reverse glass painting was introduced to Java by Dutch colonial artists in the late 19th century. Glass painting still occurs in Indonesia today, with Islamic calligraphy being popular subject matter.
