(2005) - $AUD 22

Occasional Paper 4 explores two of the recurrent themes in the development of Central Australian anthropology: collaboration and language.

The first of these themes (collaboration), revolves around the working and intellectual partnerships such as Spencer and Gillen (Phillip Jones), Ted Strehlow (Michael Cawthorn and Hermann Malbunka), Carl Strehlow (Anna Kenny) and Otto Siebert (Chris Nobbs).

Papers on language include a previously unpublished manuscript by TGH Strehlow, and a discussion on the translation of Carl Strehlow’s mauscripts (Hans Oberscheidt).

Finally, Gavan Breen addresses the development of Arrernte orthographies.

Proceedings from the Strehlow Research Centre conference held in Alice Springs in September 2002 are now available. The volume contains 28 papers from the conference covering a range of themes relevant to central Australian anthropology and history:

  • Arrernte culture, society and custodianship,
  • The work of TGH Strehlow and Carl Strehlow
  • TGH Strehlow's family life,
  • The missionary legacy in central Austalia, and
  • Strehlow's legacy in a contemporary context.

With contributions from leading academics in the field, Traditional Custodians, and Strehlow family members the volume is sure to be of interest to a wide variety of researchers, students, and people interested in the Strehlow 'story'.

Occasional Paper 3: The struggle for souls and science, constructing the fifth continent: German missionaries and scientists in Australia

The struggle for souls and science, constructing the fifth continent: German missionaries and scientists in Australia

(2004) - $AUD 33

The 16 papers in this volume, edited by Professor Walter Veit, explore the contribution of late nineteenth and early twentieth century German scientists and missionaries in the emerging fields of Australian ethnography and linguistics.

Themes within the papers include the study of Aboriginal religion, language, and art, and the conflict between missionaries and the emerging discipline of academic anthropology in Australia and Britain.

Occasional Papers Number 3 also addresses the academic influences, research agendas and methodologies of the German scholars who worked in Australia, as well as the extent to which those scholars dominated the creation of an image of Australia in Europe in both theory and practice.

Journey to Horseshoe Bend

Journey to Horseshoe Bend

$AUD 16.50

Long recognised as a landmark in Australian literature, TGH Strehlow's remarkable novel is an autobiographical account of the final journey of his father, Carl Strehlow. Written in 1969, the book weaves together a teenage boy's narrative of landscape, isolation and death with the adult Strehlow's insights into Arrernte history and mythology.

In recent years the novel has seen renewed interest from scholars, artists and musicians, culminating in late 2003 in the performance of a cantata based on Journey to Horseshoe Bend at the Sydney Opera House.
