Researcher Access to the Strehlow Archives

Archival Research General Access Form

The Strehlow Research Centre welcomes enquiries regarding information or access to the Strehlow Collection. All requests for access to the Strehlow archival collection must be made in writing to the Director.

Prospective users of the collection should note that much of the film, sound recordings and archival materials concern Aboriginal men’s sacred and secret ceremonies. This material remains significant and sensitive to the Aboriginal community in Central Australia. Public release or display of some elements of the Strehlow Collection has the potential to cause distress or offence to the community.

Other elements of the collection, such as genealogical records, relate to individuals and families alive today.

Researcher access to such material may be limited by the need to protect individual privacy.

Research access to any part of the Strehlow collection is ultimately at the discretion of the Strehlow Centre Board.

The Board will take into account the sensitivity of the material involved, and the wishes and views of the Traditional Custodians of that material, in making a determination on access.

For more details regarding access to the Strehlow Collection, please read our collection policy (pdf 307Kb) or contact the Director, Strehlow Research Centre.
