Conserving Objects
The conservation team cares for the collection and monitors its condition very closely, carrying out treatments as required to ensure its ongoing preservation. The work of conservators is based on a knowledge and understanding of how materials react to their environment.
Darwin’s tropical climate presents particular challenges with pest and mould management, and with its extremes of humidity. All incoming material needs to be acclimatised, thoroughly inspected, fumigated, and treated if mouldy.
Some ways to treat mould and pest infestations are described in the attached documents.
