Background

The Award was founded in 1984 as the National Aboriginal Art Award by the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. The aim of the Award is to recognise the important contribution made by Indigenous artists and to promote appreciation and understanding of the quality and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art from rural and urban based Indigenous artists throughout Australia, working in traditional and contemporary media. The Award is an important showcase for both established and emerging artists and has come to be regarded as the premier national event in the Australian Indigenous art calendar.

The Award attracts a range of Indigenous artists from all parts of the country and up to 150 works are selected each year from up to 500 entries. The diversity and style of work submitted each year reflects the changing face of contemporary Aboriginal art practice.

Telstra has sponsored the Award since 1992 and its support has continued to further enhance the profile and prestige of the Award. In 2000, Telstra doubled the First Prize money from $20,000 to $40,000 making it the highest amount offered for any Indigenous art award. The First Prize is acquisitive and enables the winning work each year, along with others, to be retained in the collection of the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory courtesy of Telstra sponsorship. Telstra has recently announced its ongoing support for the Award, amounting to a total of over $1 million in sponsorship over the next five years.

As well as providing $56,000 in prize money, Telstra has twice sponsored a travelling exhibition, in 2000 and 2003, enabling around 40 - 50 selected works to be shown in regional galleries around Australia. This tour is particularly important as it presents and promotes the richness of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander art to a wide audience across the country.
