The 21st Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award is the premier national Indigenous event on the arts calendar. Initiated by the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in 1984, today the 21st Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award provides $56,000 worth of prize money, making it one of the highest prizes offered for any art award in Australia. The Award attracts a broad range of artists from around the nation.
This year 103 artworks were selected for inclusion in the 21st Award exhibition. This survey exhibition showcases up-to-date developments in contemporary Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander art, with its diversity of themes, styles and media. Artworks include paintings, sculpture, fibre, ceramics, prints and photography.
Winner of 21st Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award 2004
The Telstra First Prize of $40,000 was awarded to artist Gulumbu Yunupingu for her work Garak, The Universe, an installation of three memorial poles. This prize is acquisitive and the work automatically becomes part of the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory's Telstra Collection.
