The 20th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award survey exhibition in 2003, showcased a cross-section of contemporary Australian Indigenous art from around the country.
The Award was founded by the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in 1984, and remains the nation's first and longest-running Award dedicated to Indigenous artists. Since 1992, Telstra has been the Award's major sponsor.
Part of their sponsorship includes $56,000 in prizes, making the Telstra Award one of the richest in Australia. The Award is open to all adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and there is no particular theme or restriction on what visual art can be entered.
In 2003 the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory celebrated its milestone twentieth year of hosting the Award.
The judges Dr Brian Kennedy, former Director of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and Ms Franchesca Cubillo, Director of the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute -Tandanya, Adelaide, nominated the winning works from a strong exhibition of 115 artworks, preselected from an initial 400 submissions.
