Visual Arts and Crafts

The Visual Art and Craft section of the History and Culture branch undertakes collection development, research and public programs in Australian visual art and craft (non-Indigenous) so that the collections and related activities reflect the multicultural composition of Australian society.

The collection acquires in four defined areas:

  • Artworks by significant Australian painters, sculptors and print-makers, exemplifying trends in fine art practice over 200 years, with an emphasis on the late twentieth century.
  • Paintings, sculpture, drawings, photographs and prints created in response to scientific, historical and visual investigations of the Northern Territory and neighbouring regions.
  • Works of art by the best contemporary practitioners of the Northern Territory.
  • Works of craft by the best contemporary practitioners in Australia, with particular focus on textiles and fibre, body adornment and functional ceramics.
