Southeast Asian Arts and Material Culture
The Southeast Asian Art and Material Culture collection consists of art, crafts and historical artefacts from the cultures of Southeast Asia.
Comprising of over 3,000 objects with an emphasis on textiles, ceramics, body adornment and carvings, the collection aims to promote our understanding of Australia's nearest regional neighbours through their art and material culture.
The ten countries represented in the MAGNT collection range from the oldest kingdom of Cambodia, first established in the 8th century, to the recently independent nation of Timor Leste.
The focus of the collection is the rich ethnic traditions of Indonesia. Recording a time span from the present to about four thousand years ago, the Southeast Asian Art and Material Culture collection is a reminder of the immense diversity and the complex histories of this region with which Australia's future is intimately linked.
