Museums and Art Galleries Board of the NT

Board Members

The Chairperson and other members of the Board are appointed in writing by the Minister for Arts and Museums under Section 16 of the Museums and Art Galleries Act 1999 (NT).

  

Professor Marcia Langton - Chairperson
An eminent anthropologist and geographer, has achieved many accolades in her studies of Indigenous Australia and in advisory roles on cultural identity, land rights, the mining industry and social issues in Aboriginal communities. Professor Langton was made a member of the Order of Australia in 1993 and is the Foundation Chair of Australian Indigenous Studies at the University of Melbourne.

Alastair Shields - Deputy Chairperson  

Formal qualifications: LLB, BBus (Accounting) & CPA (Northern Territory)

Acting Executive Director, Policy, Department of the Chief Minister.

 

John Waters QC

Barrister-at-law.  Appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1997.

Pip McManus

Practising artist, based in Alice Springs since 1981.  A founding member of Watch This Space, Central Australia’s artist-run experimental art space.  Exhibited widely throughout Australia including in Contemporary Territory at the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin in 2004.  Instrumental in the creation of the first Public Art Policy for Alice Springs.  Recipient in 2007 of the Northern Territory’s  inaugural Declan Apuatimi/J Bird Public Art Fellowship.

Peter Whitehead

Peter Whitehead's working life has involved an eclectic mix of direct engagement in legal administration, wildlife management, wildlife research and policy in natural resource management, extending over more than three decades. Research experience exceeds 20 years in government and academia, including leadership roles as foundation Director of an Australian Research Council Key Centre, in the management group and theme leader in two CRCs, and as head of a government wildlife research group. Most recently he has been involved in the development of policy and law for native vegatation management, environmental offsets and climate change. Research interests include animal physiology, wetland ecology, wildlife harvest management, fire management, climate change and related policy questions. He has a particular interest in working with Indigenous people to secure a greater formal role in resource management. He has published in the peer - reviewed literature in all of these areas, including about 150 journal articles, book chapters, technical reports and popular articles. His contributions to conservation management have been recognized in appointments to the Boards of Kakadu, Nitmiluk and Garig National Parks, as Commissioner of the NT Parks and Wildlife Commission and membership of the NT Heritage Advisory Council.
