Statement of Heritage Value
The Palmerston Cemetery has an intrinsic value to the community by virtue of its ability to reflect changing cultural attitudes to burials and use of cemeteries. Its recorded history on site and elsewhere add a further dimension to the understanding of the Territory's past.

The chronological list of persons buried in Palmerston before and after 1902 provides a basis from which various facets of the Territory's past can be assessed. Difficulties in living in a tropical climate and what was, at that time, considered a remote community, may be inferred from the numbers and causes of deaths whereas the variety of age, sex and former occupations of the deceased provide significant data in determining the population profile.

The Palmerston Cemetery provides a tangible reminder of the exploits and lives of many who have contributed to the development of the Territory. Each grave represents the last resting place of pioneers in their own right whose contribution collectively is important to the interpretation of the Territory's and Darwin's historical, social and cultural background.
