Statement of Heritage Value
Johannes Lebrecht Noltenius was one of the earliest pioneers in the Northern Territory. He was second in charge of the first Northern Territory Gold Expedition which was undertaken in 1872 and was involved in or associated with various gold and other ventures relating to mining up to the time of his death.

At the time of his death he was a member of a mining party which operated the Daly River Copper Mine. He with his partners discovered copper in the Daly River area in 1883 and began mining in 1884. This was the first commercial copper mining enterprise in the Northern Territory and mining in this area continued sporadically due to the economy for a period of 26 years.

On 3 September 1884 the Copper Mine was attacked and all members of the party were killed except for Noltenius and Roberts. Noltenius died adjacent to the billabong which was named in his honour after Roberts had to leave him to raise the alarm. Noltenius was found a number of days later and was buried near where he died.
